About the difference in human nature in dealing with chronic problems vs acute problems. I don’t mean to switch gears into climate debates, but basically, humanity can’t get its shit together with the slow moving climate change crisis. But give out a hurricane warning - a looming disaster we can experience in real time, and people motivate like crazy. Acute crises tend to highlight the best of our natures. Slow moving chronic ones - so slow that we don’t really feel them as they happen (rise of fascism over a couple of decades in Churchill’s case) - they bring out the worst in us. Think Chamberlain lying down for Hitler in Czechoslovakia vs England rallying at Dunkirk.

This isn’t an inability to learn situation. Particularly in the case of this young cohort, its the unfortunate simplistic worldview that they have learned which imo causes most of the problem.
