Interesting comments from former GOP NH Senator Bob Smith on NPR a few
minutes ago.
Said straight up that this GOP is no longer the party of fiscal conservatives and people focused on national security or the global stage. That Donald Trump has transformed it into a populist party for working class people that care about prices and the border.
I care about prices and the border, I think everyone does. But I'm glad to see these MAGA converts acknowledge that they no longer care about the things Republicans did for decades and decades before Donald Trump. Also basically said that Haley will now be associated with the Romney and Sununu wing of the party if she doesn't bow out, and won't be welcome in MAGA circles (I'm paraphrasing here).
And there you have it. Someone who probably feels comfortable speaking for the GOP saying that the GOP no longer cares about the principles of "establishment" voters. It will be interesting to see how long this "movement" lasts, the demographics certainly cut against it over time.
But if it does, regular people will need other options and we should really think about how we select candidates for general elections. The 2-party system is starting to crack.
