For about 100 years after that much of the country officially prevented some citizens from voting, or going to certain schools, or sitting at certain lunch counters,and so on.

We have a long history as a racist country, and the fact that Haley thinks it’s “too soon” to be very direct about that - it says some very nasty things about her view of her own party. And I think her cowardice here could really cost her. Some of the sorts of repubs considering her might themselves be very turned off by it. Downright insulted by it.

The UK, France, Belgium, Holland, you name it pretty much - all have histories as racist countries. Nobody really has a history as an effective diverse democracy yet - that’s only really been underway since the 1970s. But to succeed in that effort, we’ll need to face the realities of our past without all the mental gymnastics.
