As it relates to his decision making. I don’t think we have enough information to know whether or not Austin was thinking clearly but pain or pain management will impact anyone’s decision making. All I’m saying is there needs to be a process for Senior Leadership and notifications to occur when they either fail to act or even if they give an order not to act. I had a young MP early in my military career tell a 2 star that he was taking him to the hospital even though he had ordered him not to. The man was having a stroke and fortunately for him this young E-4 recognized it and said “Sir you can kick my ass out of the army in the morning, but tonight you are going to the hospital.” He not only saved his life, but he stepped in briefly and took over the decision making process where he could not due to a medical emergency.
