Some of this is on the listener - it is the definition of humility imo

to reach some tough goal - athletically, professionally, etc... - and to sincerely believe that one's ability to even have the opportunity to work toward that moment is due completely to something much greater than oneself. There is humility inherent in that gratitude.

Of course there are those who make an insincere mockery of this. I know you don't have the warmest view about some of this stuff -- you have talked about it and fair enough. I'm certainly not proselytizing and we all have our own experiences. I'm just suggesting there is an inherent humility in truly believing and being thankful for a God that is much greater than the self, so it shouldn't feel too off-putting to hear someone want to acknowledge this at a big moment even if it is a belief you don't share --- unless you think it is hypocritical performance 100% of the time.
