I think many of Trump’s voters would exit stage left, and support

Nobody. I disagree that “2nd choice” matters as much as the trajectory of the overall favorability ratings. I disagree that DeSantis will ever be able to create the devotion Trump has. I think that’s the problem for all the candidates - one way or the other, Trump would poison the chances of anyone able to surprise in the primaries.

I think we’ll be seeing this in the first 8 weeks or so of the year. DeSantis might do ok in Iowa, although polls aren’t convincing, and I think he’ll get waxed in the early primaries.

As for the future, there is not going to be a Trump 2 imo. DeSantis will never be a national factor if that’s his strategy. Which, by the way, is his chosen strategy this time, so it is 100% his fault that he’s apparently imploded, and I think will be shown to have imploded very clearly once real voting begins.
