Several years ago I heard an interview of Lilianna Mason, a professor of political science at Johns Hopkins, about her book Uncivil Agreement. She said the leading leading risk factors/indicators of likely civil war (as determined by people who study such things) are a racial and ethnic political divide, an economic crisis, and the perceived illegitimacy of an election or government.

Obviously there is very little risk of a civil war in America, but however unlikely, that risk is greater than zero. And it wouldn't take a full-blown civil war to undermine our system of government.

We already have way too many citizens who doubt or deny the legitimacy of elections. Using courts which will be perceived to be partisan to keep the leading candidate of a party off the ballot, potentially denying almost half of the American voters the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate, will throw gasoline on the fire. Seems stupid and reckless it seems to me.

I don't want Trump to be elected, but this is a dangerous, undemocratic, and (imo) illegitimate way to beat him. A very large percentage of Americans will not accept it and to them it will confirm the worst things they are already willing to believe. This kind of thing just gives Trump more ammunition.

Those who don't want Trump to be elected just concentrate on beating him at the polls.
