publicly known, and as details emerged (still in the ‘70s) about Cambodia and Laos and Chile and more, continued to be judged and reviled immediately post-government tenure.

Exhaustive biographies take awhile to research, fact-check, write and edit, but Seymour Hersh’s definitive Prince of Power was published in 198fucking3. All of this stuff was in there, during Reagan’s first administration.

The moral judgment is neither complicated nor difficult, nor changed by historical/cultural perspective, unlike, say, Robert E. Lee.

That you weren’t aware of something doesn’t mean it is unfair retrospective judgment.
