I’m not sure figuring out a way to jettison Joe wouldn’t present fewer problems. Polls at least indicate the Joe coalition would be open to greater enthusiasm for a different option, but I guess it would depend on the option. For instance, the black coalition that rallied hard around Joe after SC in ‘20 seems open to alternatives.

Repubs have a similar issue, but maybe even more daunting. Trump gives them the lowest odds of all alternatives now against Joe (although he also leads Joe slightly in polls). Another alternative almost definitely gives them a better chance in the general election. If Trump accepts his loss, that is. Which is almost impossible to see - Trump will almost definitely drag his base with him to some new “truth social” party or something. That would probably bury the otherwise favored Trump alternative in the general.

I suspect the dem party sticks with Joe out of inertia, and fear of the history of primary challenges to incumbents, but it would not rebel and disintegrate if Joe did get kicked to the curb. Trump all but holds the repub party hostage. I doubt they could quit him, even in a fair and square primary contest, without blowing the whole party to smithereens.
