The historic areas in just about every destination city in Europe blow any
place in the US out of the water. The differences, IMHO, are more in lifestyle for the people who live there. I’d much rather live in a suburban neighborhood in a nice spacious McMansion in the US than in some little cookie cutter row house or drab apartment block in a European suburb, but if you can afford to live in the cool part of a European city it would be pretty awesome. Cities are generally safer, more walkable, way more culture and history, better mass transit, etc. and the European restaurant culture is downright amazing.
Depends on the places though. Portugal is kind of a mess and we were about as unimpressed with the Italians as we could have been when we visited there, despite the wealth of art, history, and great food and wine. Spain and France, OTOH, we absolutely loved and the UK more or less felt like home.
