Just basic upkeep and infrastructure for one. Not to mention service
My impressions on this trip are mostly influenced by time spent in Portugal. That was the last leg of my trip and the longest stretch of it. There’s so much history and beauty there but you travel to these places and they don’t seem to have the means to maintain it all very well. You just get a better appreciation for living in one of the wealthiest nations on earth when you spend time in ones that are not very wealthy.
I had to drive home last night from Dulles to VB and just that stretch of highway, all practically brand new pavement, the buildings and lights and shops all along the way as you drive down 295 and 64. It’s not like that over there. You get outside of Madrid and everybody is living in what looks like huge warehouses of apartment buildings. Even in the tourist areas of Portugal it’s run down. Abandoned buildings everywhere in Porto that have been like that for years apparently. I enjoyed visiting more historical and ancient towns in these countries. Toledo, Segovia, Avila, Braga, Guimares…
London on the other hand is not lacking for funds or upkeep! It was my first time there. Everybody dresses like they just walked out of a fashion shoot and I kind of found it soulless, tbh. [Post edited by wahoo138 at 11/14/2023 12:37PM]
