Abortion being free absolutely plays a role! It's helluva lot easier to get an abortion within the first 12 weeks if you don't have to save up an extra $500-600 to pay for one (much more if you have to travel far).

It's also certainly a lot less costly for taxpayers than the costs of (a) long-term medical treatment for unhealthy babies forced to be born, (b) medical treatment for the women who couldn't have abortions because the health implications to them weren't imminent "medical emergency" or "irreversible harm to a major organ", (c) welfare, etc. costs for children born from unwanted pregnancies, and so on. Not to mention higher taxpayer costs for schools and other public goods with more children born.

And in terms of being "safe, legal, and rare," Denmark's abortion rate is 14.3, compared to the US rate of 20.8.

I am generally fine with Denmark's exceptions and never said otherwise. I wouldn't support that in the US as a "compromise" with Republicans because Republicans have proven they can't be trusted when it comes to abortion laws. I am 100% confident that if such a law passed in the US, Republicans would immediately replace all the Danish exceptions with an "only if the woman is about to die in the next 20 minutes" exception and claim "but you already agreed to 12 weeks and we're still "protecting the life of the mother!""

I'd ask if you, Mr. Pro-Choice, would support the exceptions outlined in the Danish law, but I already know the answer.
