And that is 95% of the problem.

I bet the vast, vast majority of Americans would agree in principle with a 15-week cut-off with reasonable exceptions for health and life of the mother, health of the baby, and rape & incest.  But how you define those very broad terms is why Republicans have proven they can't be trusted on this topic.

How do you define "health of the mother?"  Republican laws define it in very restrictive (yet also vague) terms of "serious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman."  We have seen that that language has doctors (and their lawyers) refusing to perform abortions in cases the vast majority of Americans would deem reasonable under the generic "health of the mother" exception but Republicans won't allow.  We've seen story after story of the cruelty that forces on to women.

How do you define "life of the mother?"  Because Republicans again have very restrictive (yet also vague) language in their laws for that too.  In some states, the laws only allow abortion "in a medical emergency."  So if she's likely to die but not actually on her deathbed with death imminent, Republicans will not allow an abortion.

Republican laws also explicitly define "health" as excluding mental health.  So if a pregnant woman is likely to commit suicide, Republicans would literally rather the woman kill herself (and therefore also her fetus) than let her have an abortion.

And as I have mentioned, there are also Republican laws that do not allow exceptions for rape or incest, and others that do not allow exceptions for non-viable pregnancies.

Again, "life and health of the woman" sound like reasonable exceptions on the surface.  But the Republican laws as written and passed in this country do NOT actually provide reasonable exceptions for the life and health of the woman and are not in line with what the vast majority of Americans want when they say "15 weeks with reasonable exceptions."
