Walk in the shoes of repubs on your point - they could well believe nominating Trump is just about the only chance they have to recapture the WH in ‘24. Reasonably, what could one expect Trump to do with a loss in the primaries? Not accept it, that’s for sure. So, you’d probably be looking at Trump running anyway, but one way or the other he’d mobilize his brainwashed base against the repub candidate in all likelihood.
It’s weird given how few people claim to want this matchup, but I think each party’s circumstances are extremely likely to drive it anyway.
