The rule of law must prevail, without fear or favor.
You've made references to the Civil War a number of times, so I will add one myself. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln chose to resupply Fort Sumter after South Carolina seceded. He did that knowing that it might meet with a violent reaction, and it did. Shortly thereafter, Fort Sumter was bombarded by South Carolina troops, the spark that ignited the war. In order to compel those seceding states back into the union, he made a call for additional troops to put down the rebellion, and additional states seceded, my home state, Virginia among them. So, in order to uphold the Constitution and preserve the union, he acted. The other choice (similar to what you seem to suggest in the current situation) would have been to ignore the Constitution and the viability of the union and let the 11 seceded states go on their way and hope for the best. Should we let the conspirators who attempted to overturn an election and foment a coup go, without consequences, because of fear that there MAY be violence?
Hell no! If this isn't dealt with now, something much more serious is certain to happen later, and sooner rather than later. We either are a nation of laws or we aren't. [Post edited by Chuck Taylor at 08/24/2023 4:02PM]
