I could not disagree more with your last statement. Why do you say that?
because it's not "real"? Because you and your family are not at risk? because it's a niche issue? Because of some religious or moral objection? Because of some freedom, or free market issue? That's the way insurance works. Insurance companies have to cover diabetes treatments and cancer treatments, even if the root cause of diabetes might be something in somebody's head causing them to overeat. If I am at low risk for diabetes but high risk for cancer I don't get to opt out of the diabetes coverage and premium. Insurance companies should be required to cover recognized conditions and treatments.
As I said before, I think it's likely that there are differing causes for similar symptoms. I would fine if somebody like FDA set regulations about how to diagnose and when and how to treat gender dysphoria. But it's real, it's a medical issue, and it should be covered like any medical issue.
