Gas has a COP less than 1 - older systems around 0.8

and newer ones around 0.93-0.95. A heat pump has a COP of 2.3 to 3.5 (I did a project with one that had a COP slightly above 4.0). That means that for every 1 BTU of energy delivered, your NG furnace only outputs say 80% or 93-95% of that BTU. For a heat pump, its the opposite - 1 BTU will give you the equivalent to 230 to 350%. That also means your furnance can be downsized as a result in climates that dont see frigid cold weather.

Also I believe the COP of a heat pump is still going to be better than a furnace in extreme colds, they just do not produce the high COP that is expected but it will be around 1-1.2/3. I know for a fact it will be more efficient than your furnace at -10F based on the newest models I am seeing/specifying.

Look at the Nordic countries in Europe and see what they are installing!! And the savings are real. I have seen reports that show $600-1000 per year for places like Maine, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Massachussets. ,

Thats also why the AC unit is air based in your house. It has the same COP as the heat pump.
