At upper Midwest, Northern Plains, and New England winter temperatures at

night (and during the day during cold snaps) a Heat Pump has to turn on the electric filaments (Heat Strip) to provide the amount of heat needed. Visualize a giant toaster (or baseboard heat from back in the day). When they have to switch to this mode they become much less efficient and more costly. If people in these Northern climates are forced to use Kerosine heaters or Wood Stoves to heat in a more cost effective way they will end up spewing more carbon into the air than their gas furnaces would have.
