Defended one. Lost, or so I thought until I talked to some insurance

defense guys I was friendly with from my plaintiffs PI work. “Oh man I got my ass kicked,” “How much?” “$15,000, plus another ten grand in punitives” “What was the demand?” “A hundred fifty.” “sdh, in our business we call that a ‘win’!”

It was a Korean language newspaper. So it wasn’t an English word but rather Korean symbols at issue. Which, we tried and failed to convince the jury, have multiple possible meanings including some that weren’t defamatory. (The pictograph in question meant “pimp” according to the other side, but “fixer” or “arranger” according to me. In a memorably bad cross examination my client blurted out, “But he IS a pimp!”)
