I think there is a flaw in your logic...
I agree that people get a benefit that is roughly proportional to what they pay in and thus people think it isnt a welfare system. Specifically, people think "I paid in, so I get money out, therefore no welfare".
The flaw in this logic is, because of how the contributions and benefits have been calculated/worked, the people that are currently paying in, are just paying for their grandparents/parents SSN. It is a pyramid scheme essentially. Thus, my grandparents and parents are getting welfare, because the money they are getting isnt their fair share of the amounts they put in + growth, it is, generally speaking of course, their fair share of the amounts I/other working people put in.
That being said, my argument is a political non-starter and all of my rich white relatives will continue to say "welfare is bad" while cashing their Social Security Check and going to their Medicare doctors appts, because "they paid in".
