There is also a massive funding difference between the two. SS is funded at
12.4% (up to the cap) while Medicare/aid is only funded at 2.9%.
I think you're right about continuing to push out the age to collect SS, and I would lift, if not eliminate the cap on payroll being taxed if you refuse to consider any type of privatization. But I don't see how you sustain Medicare/aid without raising the funding, and probably substantially, given how much longer folks are living. You could push out ages there, but as I understand it that would have less impact since the payouts are so heavily weighted toward the end of life. You can try and improve the efficiency and delivery of care, but I'm not sure that moves the needle much unless you're talking about serious rationing of care (which is a non-starter).
