Israel is very similar to its neighbors in that way.
It was founded to be the “Jewish State”, so how can it honor the (imo) inviolable concept of separation of church and state in any democracy? It actually has, to a better degree than most of its neighbors with its own non-Jewish citizens imo. Including Muslims, although Israeli society has its bigotry, of course. Recent far right regimes there have infringed on those concepts to a degree, like in many places.
But, it is the “Jewish State”, and Israel as a democracy has a major issue with millions of non-Jews living under its control without any political rights. They’re not citizens of Israel.
All countries in the mid-east, and South Asia, have this tension with democracy imo.
