"District Court properly applied existing law in an extensive opinion

with no apparent errors for our correction," Chief Justice Roberts wrote. The option for SCOTUS was to let the District Court decision to stand while they placed the issue on the docket for further review, i.e. addressing the basic legal underpinning. 5-4 decided that the extra GOP seat this fall was more important.
