I believe my first house loan, in 1982, was at 12.5%, with 20% down. But a


couple years before that I remember reading an article in Esquire predicting that my generation would never be home-owners, given that interest rates then on 20 yr mortgages (I may be misremembering but I don't think they had 30 year house loans in 1979) were around 17%, and what young person in their first job could afford that?
