From what I can tell, it appears that the most oldest/most vulnerable are typically the ones that have to be sedated in order to be intimated. Sedation in itself is very dangerous the older someone is or the more health complications they have. I do wonder if that itself may be increasing the odds of dying rather than other non-invasive treatments. The doctor that Shenhoo posted about the other day seemed to think that intubation and ventilators are the wrong approach and our entire paradigm for treatment of this disease is wrong.
