A colleague of mine from Denmark once remarked that in his country there

were a number of people from Turkey who had moved there in a building boom post-WWII and had stayed, but weren't citizens. When I asked why, he said because they weren't Danes. Lest we forget, Europe is still somewhat tribal. The US isn't meant to be based on race or creed or anything other than the rule of law, to state the obvious. We are better at assimilation than anyone in Europe. This is one reason Trump's reference in Poland to "blood and soil" nationalism pissed me off so much. That is most definitely NOT the United States.
