Before the national bans, there seemed to be plenty of scrutiny on immigration applications from those countries. I believe the average waiting period was 2 years. So the better question is, why do we think applicants from these countries were not subjected to great scrutiny?

I agree - immigrants should be screened, and those with violent fundamentalism of any kind should be excluded. People coming from Muslim theocracies warrant scrutiny. A full ban is not additional scrutiny. It's a presumption of guilt. If you didn't say you were ok with that, I have no idea what you said.

Trump is not generally known for reasonably adjusting course based on objections outside his base. He abandoned his initial exceptions for non-Muslims instantly. It was probably the best indication of the Constitutional firewalls against the worst of Trumpism. Allowing in only certain faiths from a country is a clear violation of a rule against govt encouragement of establishment of certain religions over others.
