I think what Tuck and JohnHoo are getting at is

there is a difference in the organization and the people in the organization. People in the military seem to be more tolerant toward each other than society in general. Large sports teams are the same way. When you "spill blood in the same mud" nobody cares if you are white, black, brown, whatever. They just care that you have their back when the shit hits the fan.

Corporate America doesn't reflect this. You may not be racist at work, but at home this can be a different story. There isn't as great a bond.
