That is how Turkey does it. The first check point is at airport entry.

They have vehicle check point too, but that's for spot checking.
Reading it more, seems like the attackers went into the airport through the arrival area, where security is lighter. But in any case, wherever you set up a check point, it'll create an area where a lot of people are waiting in line who are vulnerable to attacks. The sad truth is we simply can not protect all the soft targets.
