Very, very difficult to protect against individuals that are willing to.

and, in fact, even EAGER to die in the course of carrying out their attacks.

Only way to come close to preventing such things is totalitarian state control of, well, virtually everything. And even then you're not going to stop them all.

Number of people killed by terrorists still pales in comparison to people killed by other sorts of criminals. I'm definitely in the camp of "not worth giving up too much if any of our individual liberties" to prevent some undefinable portion of such an extremely insignificant category of crime.
