Locals essentially want the entire area to remain their own, private wilder
wilderness. As it seems that logging isn't coming back, you would presume that most local recognize that.
Currently, they have a pretty vast area of wilderness that no one except the locals use on an regular basis. They want it to remain that way.
You can't really blame them for that, parks will bring in a ton more people. If I lived next to 100,000 of basically undeveloped wilderness which I generally had access to for as long as I could remember and someone said they wanted to make it a park with roads, campgrounds and lots of tourists - and restrict my access to it, I wouldn't be all that thrilled either.
Making an area a national park generally takes that land away from the almost exclusive use of the locals and gives it to the entire nation to use. If the land is in danger of development or destruction, I would think locals might be more on board. If there is no real danger to the wilderness of that land changing, it makes complete sense why locals wouldn't want changes that would only bring more people, crowding them out and restricting their use.
