There's a few things going on
Northern Maine has serious economic issues. It's a breathtakingly beautiful area, but t's having a hard time keeping up. Logging and farming had been the major economies, and now farming is almost dead and logging is slowing down. Speaking broadly: this isn't a young nor a particularly educated workforce. Anecdotally, folks are telling their kids to head south (to southern Maine or New Hampshire) as they leave the nest. Some argue that giving the land to the government instead of putting it up for private bids is a job killer in an area that's already having a hard time adapting.
The trickier part: you don't choose to live in northern Maine because you want a lot of company. There are hermits up there who don't care for government very much and don't want a bunch of tourists showing up. [Post edited by CavMan1 at 05/23/2016 10:40AM]
