Yes the Democratic Party was dominated by the Segs


and Republicans were an after thought with numbers so small that they were an afterthought and basically were told to shut up and behave. Thus when LBJ decided to pass the civil rights act, his only hope was to get Republican support which was hard with the way they had been treated, as it turned out a higher percentage of Republicans voted for it than Dems. Most of the Republican opposition came from the Libertarian wing that did not want to expand government power that far. Barry Goldwater voted against it and has been libeled ever since as a racist by the left despite being a life long member of the NAACP and key to integrating the Az National Guard.
On a personal note my extreme left wing sister in law worked in the Johnson White House and considered him a despicable Human Being due to the way he treated everyone
