I'm convinced they aren't even trying to win the general at this point.
It's more about having a legitimate case to take the nomination away from Trump. The Repubs are going to lose either way and know it; but worst case scenario for the GOP Party Ranks would be Trump actually getting elected president. If that happened, they would no longer have a party they are in control of (if they haven't lost that already).
My theory is they plan to lose this clusterf*** of an election, then blame four years of Hillary (which they will work very hard to make unsuccessful) on Trump. Setting themselves up to run Paul Ryan in 2020 against what they hope to be a weak and unpopular incumbent.
Not sure they have any other choice, tbh. They don't really want Ted Cruz to be president and leader of their party either, and there just isn't any justification for Kasich (also unpopular) or someone like Rubio or Jeb who crashed and burned halfway through the primaries.
