My grandmother emigrated from Germany in 1927 as a 17 year old on her own.

She married, had my mom, aunt and uncle and before the war they made several visits to my mom's grandparents, cousins, and uncles. She was there in the summer of 1939 and remembers the rush to get out of Germany. They did, I think 3 days before Hitler invaded Poland. Some of my mom's relatives visited us when I was a little kid. I didn't know anything about history at that time but they kept in touch. For a number of years my mom has commented about how we remind her of Hitler's Germany. She was referring, of course, to Trump and magats, to alternative facts and Fox news as a modern-day Goebbels. So yes, we are closer to Germany then we would like to think. You are fucking clueless if you think it's because of anti-semitism on the part of liberal voters
