Here's a state by state run down of squatter's rights. You'll note

NY does not look that different from any other state.

I think squatter's rights laws around tenancy claims are ridiculous (30 days in most places), but it's not just a NY thing. My place is currently for rent, and I make sure I'm regularly checking on it while not occupied.

The adverse possession laws seem reasonable. If you occupy, improve and pay taxes on a property for 10 years without the owner knowing, I'd say the owner deserves to lose the property.
