My understanding is that’s somewhat the case for salaried employees above

A certain income level (can be required to work overtime hours without being paid overtime).

The amount isn’t actually that high, either — something like $40k (like $20/hr based on 50 weeks at 40hr/wk). But blue collar work is mostly hourly by custom - not salaried.
