The US Congress has historically chosen to fund defense at well over
2% of GDP. The operative word there is chosen. It’s currently over 3%. Nothing was forcing us to pick up anyone’s slack, and plenty of the funding has nothing to do with NATO. Historically, until the party was destroyed by Trump, Republicans have been the biggest advocates for heavy defense spending. That said, not everything is about the money. Unless you’re Trump.
