There still isn't a "mechanism" other than withdrawing or
failing to fulfill the terms of the treaty (defending all members of the treaty). There's a collective understanding that it's bad for eastern powers (i.e. Russia) to invade European nations. That's how you wind up with the Soviet Union or WW1 and WW2 before them. Wars in Europe are bad and historically happen a lot. NATO has done a remarkable job preventing that for generations.
Like Seattle said, it's not a protection racket. It's a reflection that it's in our best interests to keep the world stable.
