Food price increases have outpaced general inflation and food represents a huge portion of many people's "budgets".
I shop a lot at Aldi, and even though prices there are still better than most grocery stores with perhaps the exception or maybe Walmart, the increases have been startling, like a 12 oz package of garden salad (basically iceberg lettuce, shaved carrots, and red cabbage) that was $0.89 pre-pandemic, but the last time I was there, was now up to $1.89 (212%). It's just kept going up, too, after initially jumping up to $1.39 (56%).
