It was impossible to get right, and I actually tried. Part of it is that this is a single person, and “they” is third person plural. I get gender dysmorphia is a thing, but it honestly puts a burden on everyone around you to remember something that is just not natural, or even second nature or grammatically correct.

And this med student was probably the best one I ever had. They functioned better clinically than my second year residents.
