There were attempts to link the Boothe group to Confederate officialdom and
it came to nothing, because although he had sympathy to the defunct Confederacy, he had no ties to it. He was a renegade, not unlike Lee Harvey Oswald, but with accomplices. I think to describe the unrest during Reconstruction as a guerilla war is inaccurate. Yes, the KKK such as it was, was roaming the land and terrorizing people, but the there was no guerilla army, certainly not one that the federal occupying army couldn't deal with if it so chose.
