Let's be clear about that.

Normal people aren't obsessed with it the way too many people are, from the (non Confederate) name changers and on-campus shamers to the Ron DeSantis acolytes. Normal people are annoyed by extreme people from either side.

Normal people understand that issues of race (and gender, and sexuality I suppose) are complicated and can be emotional, and seek solutions that make sense for the most pressing issues, through compromise when needed. I'd go so far as to say that most normal people agree with the underlying principles of social justice, and don't oppose those principles just because their political "enemies" push for them. Normal people eschew radical "solutions" that just don't make sense, don't address issues, don't really affect people. Normal people generally don't like solutions that create new problems, like cash free bail or not working hard to get criminals off the street. Normal people also aren't frightened of people that are different and don't feel threatened or offended when people raise issues. Normal people value diversity, but probably also avoid buzzconcepts like "equity".

Unfortunately, we have some misguided people on the far left and a propaganda machine on the right that makes a lot of money frightening its audience. Kinda where we are, hard to be a normal person in this country right now.
