I’m not sure how this got into this thread, but this is the problem with
The anger-infused commitment up front to “destroy Hamas”. How do you do that? They’re talking now about a “truce”, meaning, hostilities are going to cease, and Hamas is still alive and well. And will probably not have learned that they can’t reuse this barbaric tactic which launched this war, and resulted in the deaths of so many Palestinians.
I’m really not saying I want the damn war to continue. But, unfortunately, I think Israel played Hamas’ game from Oct 8 forward. Galvanized world opinion against them, such that people now often barely seem to acknowledge the brutal atrocities that set all this in motion. I strongly doubt anyone will give Israel credit for restraint, although in truth, they showed enormous restraint compared to almost any other country in their shoes. A country run by Putin, Xi, or Hamas for that matter, would only allow disinformation about their war effort, would punish any internal dissent rather than letting the world see it, and would make a mockery of international law.
But if this deal is made and Hamas remains in control, which is what a truce now will yield, Israel will face nothing but recriminations and accusations of war crimes. Hamas, which is the greatest committer of war crimes over the last 6 weeks, will not. In fact I’m sure you will see them celebrated in streets all over the world as great victors against “oppressors”. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 11/21/2023 10:21AM]
