You say that you're ok with calling it an attempt to delay electoral certification, but don't like the term insurrection. It's pretty clear that delaying the vote was the goal of the Proud Boys who were organized that day. Given the circumstantial evidence (Trump's connection to Roger Stone and Stone's connections to the organizers), it strains belief to think Trump didn't have a decent idea of what was coming. It also explains why he waited so long to put out his call for everyone to go home and only did so when he was basically threatened with the 25th amendment.

The question then is whether you think Trump wanted this to happen and/or used his rally to help make it happen. Because the Proud Boys used the people that Trump encouraged to march on the Capitol as foot soldiers in the violence. We have very clear video evidence of that.

I've never said that I think they were likely to be successful, but attempted crimes are still crimes. We know that they wanted to delay the vote past January 6 and we know that John Eastman emailed people on January 7 to say that the certification was invalid because it had happened after midnight. I don't think that they were going to win court battles on this point, but I think they genuinely were trying--all the way up to Trump and his lawyers--to get the certification delayed to keep their legal hopes alive. That's why I think it's totally fair to call it an attempted insurrection. They were trying to prevent the transfer of power, ham-handed though the attempt was.
