Playing devil's advocate for a moment.....


.... aside from the inherently imperialistic personality or Russia since its inception, the argument could be made that Russia's lack of naval access is a big motivator for this and recent fights. Despite their size, they have sparse means of ingress to international waterways. They have always had this problem and it's not going away.
