This reflects what is wrong with college athletics. Football anyway. If the
NCAA is going to be professional now (I would argue it has been for some time despite the players playing essentially for free), then it needs to implement more institutional controls. Right now it's the wild west, with schools, conferences, and most importantly TV money dictating the winners and losers.
This is why I prefer the NFL. There are controls to make it more competitive, and lucrative, for the players, coaches and owners. The referees are pretty consistent regardless of the game (see all the discussions on the football board about questions regarding officiating in the ACC and Pac-12 this past weekend). Most importantly, it's hard as hell to build a consistent dynasty. NFL teams can rise meteorically and fall just as spectacularly from one year to the next. Even up to the end of the season, nearly every single game has some significance for the playoffs.
The NCAA doesn't need to be a clone. But the model is completely out of hand right now.
