There was precedent. Ulta (cosmetics brand) got pushback for having
Mulvaney on an episode of their podcast less than a year ago. AB must have known if an appearance on a make-up podcast can get you a boycott hashtag, then an endorsement of a major beer brand could really shake things up. Doubt we'll ever get the real story (intent and impact) given the degree of politicization around it.
Of some note: it's hard to tell what the line is before boycotts start popping up. Just about every major consumer brand on the planet advertises in Out magazine and similar publications and nobody causes a stir. The endorsement in question took place on Mulvaney's instagram page... not exactly the Super Bowl or a billboard in Branson, Missouri. It's a pretty unremarkable ad... stale joke that boils down to 'I don't know about sports, but I like beer, so woohoo!' Doubt many of us would have even been aware of the ad if not for the backlash.
