Imagine you're an A+ football HC candidate
A+ as in you could have pretty much any job you wanted. What are your must-haves? Mine would be something like: Power 5 conference. Top end compensation for the entire staff. Admissions and eligibility are non-issues (beyond NCAA mins). Facilities are good-to-great. Program has a strong pre-existing brand and/or strong recruiting base within reasonable drive. School (AD, president, board, boosters) are fully committed to / aligned on investing into the program, including NIL. These would be my must-haves because they materially increase my odds of success.
Even if you pair an A+ candidate with the right infrastructure/support, there remains a decent chance of failure. But if you're limited to B/C type players, and don't have infrastructure/support to increase their odds of success, then your odds of failure go up significantly.
To put UVA in context, we don't have most of the stuff on that must-have list. And now think about our HC hiring processes. To land Elliott, we were competing against perennial bottom-feeder Duke. To pull Bronco from a midmajor, we had to offer him 7 years guaranteed. London was obviously a longshot type.
If you were an A+ coach candidate in another sport, your list of must-haves would likely be different. Football is an outlier among college sports. The fact we are good in other sports isn't all that relevant to football. In other sports, we're hiring A players.
