I think your question is more rightly "what can be done about college
football?" If you're not in the SEC or B1G, you will be relegated to the second tier. If you're not willing to make enormous investments into facilities, into players you will not compete. If you don't change academic admissions, you will not be in the top tier.
College football is essentially a professional sport and has been for a long time. The break up of conference alignments will put a lot of programs in jeopardy. But the problem is that football drives revenue. I don't know how you get fans if you're cannon fodder and you're not part of some revenue sharing scheme with a big conference.
It's too bad. But it's also why I prefer the NFL.
